Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, bassist of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died at the age of 63. His brother Greg posted the following message on Facebook: “With the heaviest of hearts, I have to announce that my brother has passed away. RIP RKID.”

Mani was a key member of both The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. He played on both Stone Roses albums, the magnificent 1989 debut and its follow-up “Second Coming” from 1994, before the band split in 1996, then rejoined for their triumphant reunion shows in 2011. In between, he took over on bass in Primal Scream, joining up with Bobby Gillespie and sticking with Primal Scream all the way until 2011.

Tributes keep pouring in for the musician from Crumpsall in north Manchester, one of the best-loved and most respected bassists of his generation.

Two years ago, Mani lost his wife Imelda Mounfield, who was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in November 2020.
