Every first Thursday of the month, Orto Bar has its traditional Eighties Night. This time Electrix used it to launch their debut album (Deja Vu), released on Dallas.
Electrix are a trio who have been playing together for quite a while, so it’s only right that they decided to record original music too. From the very first bars it was clear that Electrix have everything figured out in their heads. They know exactly what they want. They know exactly what sound they’re after, and they stick to it. They play fairly easygoing electro pop/rock, the kind they played in the eighties. Depeche Mode and Erasure came to mind first and foremost, plus a few others. All in all, it’s really quality music that gets stuck in your ear from the very first listen. Maybe it’s a touch too commercial (Depeche Mode, for example, could get pretty dark and mystical), but it undoubtedly puts a smile on your face. The lyrics are on the lighter side too, but the band probably did that for a reason.
The guys played the show with confidence, like seasoned musicians. You can tell they’ve played at Orto Bar every first Thursday of the month. There were no obvious mistakes in the performances; there were a few pre-recorded parts, but they blended into the live playing almost unnoticeably. Honestly, there’s really nothing bad to say. The performance was great, and the vocals are the “right” kind for this sort of music. Electrix first served up the new album, and later showed off their chops with covers (Orgy, Depeche Mode,…)
On the dance floor we could also spot a few lovely ladies who had clearly come out of love for this kind of music. There were some male “dancers” too, but with their unpredictable, jerky moves they caused more trouble than they did good vibes.
Electrix could fill a gap that’s missing in Slovenia – namely, quality pop. True, it’s electro pop/rock that leans heavily on the eighties tradition, but they showed they have a real sense for melody. All they lack is a bit more experience and stage presence, but that will come with time.
The album launch was a success. The guys presented their record in style and got the crowd warmed up. It’s just a shame there weren’t more people there to make the atmosphere even better, but let’s hope the love for this kind of music flares up among the Slovenian people and we’ll get to see a better-attended show from this lineup in the future.
