Broken arrow is a term that the folks at the Pentagon, and the most powerful people in the most powerful country in the world, never want to hear. Search for it on your favorite search engine and you’ll get hits for a movie and for the term’s real meaning – the loss of a nuclear weapon – while the reason for this write-up will take some extra digging. Luckily, the Americans haven’t figured out yet that a piece of the glam arsenal is stashed in our dear little Slovenian henhouse too, cleverly camouflaged near a nuclear plant, in Brežice to be exact. Broken Arrow are a band with eight years on the clock, three demos, and a debut album coming soon, and the show that was meant to present it was well pulled off at Ljubljana’s Orto Bar.
For reasons nobody quite understands, we Slovenes love to borrow foreign holidays, especially if they’ve been Americanized and commercialized. Halloween ended up in that consumerist package too, and of course it became a great excuse for partying in costume (or without), and the fact that it falls right between two days off promises fun until the early morning hours. This time Orto bar renamed Halloween “Glamoween”, and the plan was a party with the veterans of the legendary 2007 Slovenian glam tour, Lipstikk and Leathur conspiracy tour, Cyclöne and Broken Arrow. Sadly, a few days before the show word got out that Cyclöne had canceled their set, so the whole weight of the night fell on the guys from Brežice.
In a two-hour set the boys attacked the crowd with a hefty dose of glam and melodic rock that left most of the audience anything but indifferent. If about forty people were huddled in the corners of the room at the start, half an hour in the crowd had nearly doubled and was visibly having a blast. Besides a few songs that are almost household classics by now, the guys played the entire upcoming record and drove their crowd to delirium. Eighties hairdos, tight tees and leggings, bandanas, makeup and everything that goes with it – all of it was on display on the dance floor. Sadly, the band’s look wasn’t quite as coherent: apart from Bor’s bandana and Matjaž’s glam getup, there was no glam to be spotted on stage except in the music. Despite the cramped quarters (five band members plus two backing vocalists), the guys made good use of the small stage and rowdily took over every inch of space they had. Unfortunately, the longer absence from the concert stage showed, especially with Matjaž, whose vocals were the shakiest part of the show. Luckily, the voices of Bor and the backing vocalists came to the rescue, harmonizing nicely with Matjaž and bringing the crowd to all-out revelry. Just how important promoting new material is was proven by the song Have a little love, whose video the guys had put up on Youtube a few days earlier and which the crowd greeted with recognition and enthusiasm. The gig was definitely a good send-off for the new record’s release, and we’re expecting a glam conquest of Slovenia to follow.
