Artist: Enchant
Label: Inside Out Records
Release: 1997
Rating: 4/5
“Time Lost” is an EP that came out after the album “Wounded” (1996). In 2002, both releases were remastered and put out as a double CD called “Wounded/Time Lost”, via InsideOut Records. This EP was impossible to find on the market for ages, and the remastered reissue brings these songs back to life, too. The last three especially, which were written in 1989, once again mean musical perfection for Enchant, and that trio wraps up with the flawless Mettle Man, the strongest composition on the EP. What’s special about those last three tracks is that they were recorded anew, fairly recently, with Ed on bass and Ted on vocals, neither of whom was in the original 1989 lineup. The songs are a blend of the band’s past and present. The other four were written between 1994 and 1996 and already hint at the band leaning toward heavier sounds. Of those, the opener Blind Sided is especially interesting, with a slight whiff of the “grunge” trends of the time hiding inside its guitar riffs.
What more could we possibly want? That’s 53 minutes of outstanding progressive rock. “Time Lost” is a transitional release for Enchant, one that kept the spotlight of the music-loving masses on the band, while the songs also show a successful transition phase, bringing in sharper, more direct rock elements. ”Time Lost” could easily have carried the title of a standalone studio album. It’s different and fresh again compared to the band’s two previous studio albums, with Enchant’s clearly recognizable qualities and no ”filler” tracks. Enchant still radiate an unstoppable amount of sparkling enthusiasm and musical wit on this record, which gives this EP a special, unmistakable feel, one you get every time you listen to it. And only when you listen to this EP. Excellent stuff.
