Nula Kelvina – a brand-new trio of cabaret-chanson musical wordplay, backed by a witty stage set woven from the rhetoric of jazz, blues, swing, country, and whatever else you can throw in… – is a true one-off that fits in no musical box.

The trio – Marko Boh (keys, vocals), Klemen Kotar (bass guitar), Jure Rozman (drums), beefed up by the character of occasional studio and live guitar helper Gašper Kržmanc – vividly presented their freshly released studio debut “Možgani na paši” (Celinka label, 2011) at KUD France Prešeren.

The opening stretch entertained with a lucid delivery of the very essence of the trio’s studio record, like personal ID cards of the musicians themselves. A KUD packed to the rafters showed that the guys, as individual artists, have long been well plugged into the Slovenian music scene and enjoy safe, enviable support.

Since the album runs just 33 and a half minutes, Marko Boh took a delightful chunk of time before each song to walk the crowd closer to the point of each of the debut’s lyrics. Relaxed, fun, and lucid. Exactly what folks need in these not-so-rosy times. Marko’s tongue runs sharp as a razor, and at the same time sparks fly generously in his mind, lightning-fast delivering the point through a generous helping of cheeky, goofy seasoning of all sorts of quips with sharp-witted, clever content.

The band has enormous mileage in the music scene behind them, plus the knowledge and talent, so they handled the stage with feather-light ease while performing “Možgani na paši”. From the first second to the last. After a good hour of generous fun, when the temperature in the club hall had shot up well toward tanning-salon-roasting levels, it was time for the feast, which, if I may be a little wicked, was perhaps frankly the first and main reason the crowd had packed into the club in such numbers.

To sum up the experience of this really pleasant evening, Nula Kelvina proved that their newly invented powder for achieving greater brain shine passed its first test with flying colors, and our good old physics-class buddy Lord Kelvin, who was keeping a watchful eye on this experiment from heavenly paradise, was no doubt very proud of them too.
