On August 18, 2026, we received the sad news that Jurček Škodič, the original bassist of Mary Rose, has passed away. He was 71 years old.

In 1984 he co-founded the band Babylon, together with drummer Mitja Šabec. The two later joined the Postojna glam metallers Mary Rose, where Jure played all the bass guitars on the band’s unforgettable debut “Rocks Off” (RockLine review), considered one of the most important rock and metal albums in the history of Slovenian rock, and one that was clearly recognized abroad too.

Jurček Škodič is also known as one of the first radio hosts at Radio 94 in Postojna.

Staying in constant touch with Radio 94, Jurček remained active on the music scene even later, after he was no longer working with Mary Rose. Among other things, he worked with Vlado Kreslin, played in Črna gradnja, and also served as bassist for the rockers Outsider. He also sang in the Mešani pevski zbor Postojna mixed choir.

He was also a music mentor who helped many musical talents take their first steps into the world of music, and he worked in production as well as servicing and repairing audio equipment and instruments. At first Postojna came to him for his services, later pretty much the whole of Slovenia.

RockLine had the great honor of meeting Jurček Škodič on stage too. It was at the 30th anniversary of Mary Rose, at the jubilee concert at Kulturni dom Postojna. It was a two-day spectacle, a big musical celebration, and we caught the first night, on September 30, 2022, where the young author, in all his enthusiasm, wrote the following, among other things:

“Now comes the finale. The big finale. On stage stand Franci Tominšek (vocals), Eki Alilovski (guitar), Jure Škodič (bass guitar), Primož Ogrizek (keyboards) and Mitja Šabec (drums). In this biblical format the band played just three songs from the album “Rocks Off”, and visually, bassist Jure Škodič by far stole the stage. That day in Postojna, Škodič became the true king of glam, and his five other buddies could take a leaf out of his book. Jure really did bring a bit of extra eighties sentiment to the stage this way. We want more!“

Well, that ‘we want more’ will sadly never happen again. But the legacy remains. The kind that’s anchored in hearts. When you chat with people who knew him closely, it becomes clear in an instant that they won’t forget him till the end of their days. Jurček’s timeless, enduring warmth, dedication, sincerity, inspiration and eternal faith in goodness and love paved his road. That thorny road. A road driven by the eternal restlessness of a soul on pilgrimage, a road of sacrifice, one that only a few discover and choose. The purest and most beautiful souls. A yellow brick path that only the most steadfast and fearless can walk. A musical legacy bigger than the heart. You don’t push it on the public, you quietly keep it. Within yourself. Proudly and humbly! The kind that leads you all the way to the Elysian Fields of the bravest! Into eternal peace. Jurček, we won’t forget you.
