What happens when multi-instrumentalist and mostly-bassist Jani Mujič teams up with poet Tone Škrjanec? You get a project and an album, Lovljenje ritma, released on KUD France Prešeren. After it came out, the duo played the record live a few times, but Mujič couldn’t handle all the instruments by himself on stage, so two keyboardists and a drummer joined them for the shows.
The music is the work of a seriously talented composer, Jani Mujič, who sharpened his chops in the band 2227 (remember their hit No Brains No Tumors?). With every track it feels like Mujič is trying out a new style. So on the album you’ll hear hard rock, reggae, classical, electronic and ambient music. Mujič plays all the tracks himself too, with only a violinist helping out on a couple of them. The production clearly went for an old-school, heavy sound that pushes the dark atmospheres even further. The only major criticism that could be leveled at the final product is that the songs themselves might be a bit too monotonous. Even though they’re stylistically all over the place, each track has only a couple of ideas that sometimes get repeated for too long. Then again, that effect may well be intentional.
The lyrics, penned by Tone Škrjanec, can get a little overly artsy. It feels like Škrjanec wants to show off just how different and original he can be, which sometimes doesn’t come across as all that genuine. Still, for the most part the poet manages to conjure up some pretty great moods, backed by excellent music.
Lovljenje ritma is by no means the first project to blend music and poetry. One of the earliest attempts like this was the album An American Prayer by the far better-known The Doors. Much like An American Prayer, Lovljenje ritma sees both players pull off just the right ambient vibe, where music and poetry weave together effortlessly.
This album, which combines music and poetry, is without a doubt worth a listen. The music is deep and multifaceted, and it sets the mood of the lyrics just right. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who likes to try something new in music.
