Šesti – ‘Resnično obrita’: A Satirical Punk Experiment and the Black Sheep of the Album ‘Zmeden’
Last November, Šesti served up their debut ‘Zmeden’, and today they’re unveiling the boldest track on the album, ‘Resnično obrita’. The new single is something of a black sheep on the debut, fighting a battle against shallowness with punk energy and satirical lyrics.
When a Reality Show Becomes the Inspiration for a Song
The song came about as a reaction to one of those reality shows and the goings-on in it: ”As (back then still) students with a critical eye, we just couldn’t wrap our heads around the whole idea of shaving your crotch on camera. Not just the act itself, but the reporting on it and blowing it all out of proportion. We rebelled against this opium for the masses and smokescreen for the sheep the best way we know how – we wrote a tune,” Šesti say about how the song came to be. It was written on an acoustic guitar and is built around the message of the lyrics. And since the lyrics are front and center, Šesti recorded it as punk. In just under two minutes they spit out truth and parody, with Mitja (guitar) and Krištof (vocals) swapping roles on the track. The final arrangement was put together with Simon Hribovšek, Soundhit production.
No Animals Were Harmed in the Making of This Video – None of Them Are Even Real!
They also shot a video that walks the line for the song: in it, Šesti play around with smokescreens and truth, with dictators’ speeches and the primitiveness of sheep. ”We wanted to be a little scared once the video was out. We went right up to the upper limit of what’s comfortable for us, with just a bit of room to spare.” No animal was harmed or injured during the shoot – in fact, not a single animal in the video is even real. Let alone really shaved. You can check out the video here:
Šesti are currently in a bubble of making new music. The second album is in the works and already partly fleshed out, but still open to another black sheep or two.
