Nouvelle Vague never disappoint. They proved it again at the end of November at Ljubljana’s Kino Šiška. The band, led by Marc Colin and Olivier Libaux, is best known for its brilliant knack for turning famous ‘post-punk’ and ‘new wave’ tracks into ‘lounge’ music and ‘bossa nova’. That’s where the name comes from (bossa nova(Port.)=nouvelle vague(Fr.)=novi val(Slov.)). The band is considered one of the best and most innovative cover acts in the world, winning people over above all with a fresh approach and interesting interpretations. The two bandleaders do insist, though, that they’ll slowly start moving toward entirely original music and that they’re no longer interested in reworking songs that already have their own authors.

The guys in the crowd will have a particularly hard time forgetting the show at Katedrala. The band impressed with a dynamic performance and a fun setlist that included classics like ”Lullaby” (The Cure), ”Dancing With Myself” (Billy Idol), ”Blue Monday” (New Order), ”Too Drunk to Fuck” (The Dead Kennedys), ”Love Will Tear Us Apart” (Joy Division), ”God Save The Queen” (Sex Pistols) and ”Ever Fallen In Love” (Buzzcocks), but the night will most likely stick in people’s memories for the generous dose of sex appeal and eroticism on that stage. Three gorgeous singers traded places throughout the whole set, serving up a show of fantastic aesthetic pleasures with their figures and their voices. It felt much more like cabaret, totally slick karaoke and a performance piece than a regular concert.

It was definitely a show that couldn’t leave you cold. What could be better than a mix of wonderful music and sexy women? I’m already looking forward to a gig for the band’s possible new (and this time original) album.
