California’s Papa Roach, who over a solid ten years together have dipped into nu metal, alternative rock and modern hard rock, dropped an album with a pretty interesting makeup last summer, in 2010. They called it “Time For Annihilation”, with the subtitle “On The Record And On The Road”.
Yep, the guys have stitched together a package of studio recordings and tracks captured live on the road, when they toured alongside Shinedown. The whole record, which runs almost exactly one hour, has (sadly) only 5 new studio songs, which adds up to a good 17 minutes of solid sound and easy-to-swallow bangers, with lyrics juggling some pretty well-worn themes (lies, hate, a messed-up world, and the love and strength that help us get through the daily grind).
The transition from the last studio track (The Enemy) into the first live one (Getting Away with Murder) is incredibly smooth and clean. On the next track (To Be Loved), you can’t miss the opening seconds of the Ramones classic Blitzkrieg Bop, which the band loves to play at their gigs, getting the whole crowd jumping.
There are eight live tracks, and you’ve more or less heard them all before. In their studio versions they sit on earlier albums like Getting Away With Murder, The Paramour Sessions, Metamorphosis and, of course, Incest, home to Between Angels And Insects and the unforgettable banger Last Resort, which gets even the pickiest listener (or concertgoer) moving. When you’re listening to that song on “Time For Annihilation”, pay attention to the part where frontman Jacoby asks everyone in the crowd to pull their phone out of their pocket and text a number for a certain charity, donating 5 American greenbacks to the homeless. Respect!
The album is a good pick for anyone who’s ever heard of the band, for anyone who’s had the chance to catch them live, and for anyone who doesn’t mind modern takes on so-called hard rock, and it’s a must for their loyal fans.
