The end of the year is nuts! Gigs around every corner, all of them on weekends. So we got »swayed« out of Orto bar, where Ljubljana alt rock usurpers Dandelion Children had their own »shindig« and once again proved they’re one of the most promising homegrown art-music acts in Slovenia right now, followed by the »cheerful Bohinj Franz Ferdinands« John Doe, who presented their studio debut (RockLine report HERE), all the way to St. Patrick’s Irish Pub, where a bunch of seasoned musicians going by the name »Trio z dioptrijo« entertained a nicely packed room with a string of rock evergreens: Hello? A riot and a half. Once you spot the familiar faces on stage, it’s clear it couldn’t be any other way. Trio z dioptrijo is made up of the famous Sausages duo Goran Breščanski (vocals) and Marko Čulajević »Čule«, with multi-instrumental virtuoso and producer Grega Samar behind the drums, a true musical »enfant terrible«, Matevž Carnelutti (Lucky Cupids) on rhythm guitar and on bass, none other than the lost (and happily found) son of Lenih kosti, Janez Dagarin »Dago«. Dago, Matevž and Čule aren’t buddies from kindergarten, mind you, but they do form the core of MBB – Moj Boogie Band. In short, old acquaintances, a crew of battle-hardened musical foxes who know how to build a killer party out of hellishly good reinterpretations of well-known rock ‘n’ roll standards.

Something’s missing here! A trio with five members. And with glasses, no less? A core of imagination that a wild rock ‘n’ roll party badly needs.  So technically it is a trio, but since there’s a prescription involved, you see five rascally desperados on stage.

Shredding from every angle. The string of rock classics, cut with fire, seemed to have no end, and amid all the good cheer of this sprightly, randy bunch of musicians, the one who stood out was the exceptional Čule with his famous solo orgies, which he topped off with the cherry on top in the (quietly expected) Lynyrd Skynyrd standard Freebird, with a stretched-out 10-minute solo. Just like at Sausages gigs. Brilliant. Passionate and unbridled!

The beer poured down throats like a flooded mountain stream. Switch off! Much like a week ago at the Lenih kosti gig, though with a shade fewer people in the room. Let’s hope St. Patrick’s Irish Pub keeps up the continuity of this kind of event dedicated to the magic of rock! And Trio z dioptrijo? No doubt about it. If they’re anywhere near you, be sure to catch them live!
