American rock band Blondie has announced that their drummer Clem Burke has died. He was 70 years old. The band shared the sad news on Monday morning, April 7.

Blondie singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein released the following statement on behalf of the band:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke has passed away after a battle with cancer.

Clem wasn’t just a drummer, he was the heart of Blondie. His talent, energy and passion for music were immeasurable, and his contribution to our sound and success is enormous. Beyond his musical know-how, Clem was a source of inspiration both on stage and off it. His lively spirit, contagious enthusiasm and rock-solid work ethic touched everyone who had the honor of knowing him.

Clem’s influence reached far beyond Blondie. He loved calling himself ‘the last surviving Rock&Roller’! He played and collaborated with countless iconic artists, including Eurythmics, Ramones, Bob Dylan, Bob Geldof, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, Chequered Past, The Fleshtones, The Romantics, Dramarama, The Adult Net, The Split Squad, The International Swingers, L.A.M.F., Empty Hearts, Slinky Vagabond and even the Go-Go’s. His influence and contribution span several decades and touched many musical genres, leaving an indelible mark on all of them!

We offer our deepest condolences to Clem’s family, friends and fans all over the world. His legacy will live on through the music he created and in the hearts of everyone he touched with it. As we face these difficult times, we ask you to give us some privacy.” – Debbie, Chris and the whole Blondie family.
