With more than 120 million albums sold since forming back in 1968, Deep Purple long ago secured their place in rock history.
Frontman Ian Gillan says: “Where we are now with this incarnation of Deep Purple, we feel like a very ‘modern’ version of ourselves as we were in the seventies.”
For the new album, Deep Purple have teamed up once again with renowned producer Bob Ezrin. Together they’ve crafted a record that draws on the sound and attitude that has always set Deep Purple apart from everyone else. “SPLAT!” is the heaviest Deep Purple album in years, recorded the way the band have always done it: playing in the studio like they’re on stage at a gig.
Ian Gillan: “I have to say we’ve largely gone back to material that stands alongside songs like “Highway Star,” “Smoke on the Water” and “Lazy” – the dynamics, the balance and the level of fun from when we were making records between 1969 and 1973.”
“SPLAT!” is tied together by a story that was Ian Gillan’s idea. The album doesn’t depict the end of the world as sudden destruction – an apocalypse – but instead, the concept behind “SPLAT!” takes you on a journey through humanity’s gradual transformation, its metamorphosis, all the way to its end. To celebrate the release, Deep Purple will keep up their extensive touring schedule this year, with no fewer than 86 shows in 28 countries across three continents.
So new music, namely the album “SPLAT!”, is already on its way, and Ian Gillan is clearly enjoying every minute: “Deep Purple are in a great place right now.”
