On a pretty chilly evening we made our way to the Olimpijska dvorana to witness a show by the British band Depeche Mode. You obviously know pretty much everything about them already, but since 1990 they’ve grown so huge that they’ve stunned the entire pop-rock world. After a long wait for the big event, we got almost two hours of a one-of-a-kind gig and a vivid spectacle. Personally, I have to admit I was never a hardcore Depeche Mode fan, but I was really pleasantly surprised by the performance, the energy the band members radiated and the excitement in the hall. Depeche Mode’s show is simply fantastic. Why? The sound pumped out by a whole array of speakers hanging from the hall’s ceiling is incredibly clean, just loud enough and razor-sharp. The lights, lasers and regular ones alike, run flawlessly under computer control. But the best of all were the band members themselves, especially singer Dave Gahan, who rules the lower part of the stage, right in front of the raised arms of sweaty female fans. By the way, I’ve been to plenty of concerts, but this was the first time I’ve ever seen that kind of excitement and euphoria from a female crowd. The other three members also command the stage and the show with total confidence, and the highlights came when keyboardist and songwriter Martin Gore stepped up to the edge of the stage with a guitar and played a few more rocking numbers, of which I Feel You hit hardest. Despite the constant use of all sorts of synthesizers and samplers, their music never loses its power and freshness. I’d say Depeche Mode are one of the best bands in Europe, and they proved it successfully and convincingly at their Bavarian show. Truly excellent and complete!
