Dominator
Artist: Impiety
Label: Pulverised Records
Release: 2008
Looks like interest in Black metal is spreading all over the world. This extreme genre is usually tied to Scandinavia, but this time we’re dealing with a slightly more exotic country, namely Singapore, the cradle of Impiety.
The band has been around since 1990, which means since the days when Black metal was only just taking shape as a genre. They can boast a real arsenal of formats they’ve put out so far, with cassettes and vinyl E.P.s both in the mix. Judging by the music and their attitude toward it, we can safely shove them into the very elite of Black/Death metal bands, even though they’re not Norwegians.
The latest creation, Dominator, follows their tradition of militant Black metal with a slight touch of Death metal aggression, which on Impiety’s side comes through mostly in the vocals. The militancy is felt on the Dominator E.P. too, reincarnated mainly in the machine-gun speed of the drums, which sound like submachine guns. The intro already walks us into the zone of war carnage, depicting an ancient clash that carries on into a more modern way of fighting. Unfortunately, the inventive opening quickly turns into a clichéd praise of Satan and war, which are a lyrical challenge for anyone trying to read the words of the second song.
Despite the unoriginal lyrics, the music surprises us: for all 15 minutes it’s pretty much a dynamic bomb just waiting to go off, and on top of that it builds a certain amount of atmosphere, which is an indispensable part of Black metal. All four songs (besides the intro) stand out for their speed, dynamics and fairly intricate song structures, which show up mostly in the speed itself. Fans of long guitar solos might be satisfied with the almost half-minute solo on the last song. The E.P. will fully satisfy those who swear by short, sharp combinations of riffs and solo moves, those who enjoy a musical interpretation of the evil embodied by Black metal.
In short, we can describe Dominator as a solid release from Impiety, boasting enviable sound quality and an atmosphere that very few similar bands can create.
