Feedback is a young band from Tolmin playing instrumental music best described as progressive rock. They’ve put out two studio albums so far, and the single Drobljenec is a kind of teaser for their latest album Od blizu, which came out in October this year.
This single is the first time we get to hear bassist Andrej Klavžar on record. He actually joined the band back in 2004, but he didn’t play on the debut, where Miloš Leban covered the bass parts on keys (much like Ray Manzarek in The Doors).
The release has two fairly short tracks (at least by Feedback standards). The first is Drobljenec, a typical Feedback tune – dynamic, fast, and full of twists. The second song is something new for the band. It kicks off in standard jazz-rock fashion, but in the middle section you can also hear reggae influences, which Feedback have never tried before. Definitely interesting.
For anyone who doesn’t know Feedback yet, let me just say these guys have a real feel for that seventies energy. It’s mostly jazz-rock, spiced up with blues, symphonic, funk and, this time around, some reggae inserts. They know how to make their music so interesting that it’s never boring, since there’s always some trick in the songs that makes everything sound far more varied than if they just kept playing in the same rhythm, at the same volume and speed.
With Feedback, the most important thing is the interplay between the guitar and the Hammond organ, which creates that proper seventies vibe. And we can’t forget the tight rhythm section and the electric piano. These are all key ingredients that make up that signature Feedback sound.
Feedback have only two studio albums and one single behind them, and they already have a sound all their own. This single offers a nice peek at the new album and at what this band can do sonically, but since the new album is already out, I’d say go for that first and treat yourself to Drobljenec as dessert.
