Two car crashes, the mumps, and Hysteria. What on earth do they have in common?

Def Leppard! On New Year’s Eve 1984 in Sheffield, Rick Allen, drummer of what was then the most successful rock band in the world, was in a car accident that marked him for life. Dec lost his left arm. A drummer! How’s he supposed to drum now?! The band was smack in the middle of recording their fourth album, the drummer was down an arm, and the producer (Robert John “Mutt” Lange), who’s largely responsible for the Def Leppard sound, had no time to work on the next record.

After a few months Rick recovered and started playing on specially adapted drums, Lange came back, and just as the guys could finally get down to real work, wouldn’t you know it, singer Joe caught the mumps. And right when he was supposed to record most of the vocals for the album. To break up the soul-crushing grind in the studio, the guys decided to hit the road in the summer of 1986 on a mini “Monsters Of Rock” tour of England and Europe, which was more than successful and proved to fans and the label alike that they could still function as the same lineup.

In August 1987, one of the most anticipated albums of the eighties finally came out. For a few months the thing cruised up and down the charts, but the real success everyone was hoping for just wasn’t happening. Then something totally unexpected happened. In strip clubs in Florida, the track Pour Some Sugar On Me became a straight-up hit. From there on, things moved at lightspeed. By the end of 1987 the Leppards had become a phenomenon, Hysteria spat out 6 singles, and the world tour, on which they first tried out the In The Round concept in the US, nearly sold out.

Seven singles from a single album (Women, Animal, Love Bites, Armageddon It, Hysteria, Rocket and Pour Some Sugar On Me) — only Jackson managed that too, and he’s a pop artist! Nothing like it happened before or after Hysteria. To this day the album has sold more than 19 million copies. A number that speaks for itself. Given everything that surrounded the recording itself, the title Hysteria is more than justified. Either way, the legacy of this album is huge, and plenty of bands still active today, some of them even more commercially successful than Def Leppard themselves, owe a great deal to this very record!
