In the first half of this December, the Balkan Peninsula witnessed a veritable mass migration. First, thirsty, hot-blooded Motörhead fanatics from Serbia and every corner of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina stormed the nearly sold-out Tivoli hall in Ljubljana a few days ago. There, on December 10, 2012, after a long 23 years, the punk rock rascals led by the indestructible iron chancellor Lemmy Kilmister’s Motörhead were “neighing” once again (RockLine report HERE). And then came an equally weighty reason to visit the Serbian capital, Belgrade, where the three-headed beast Kerber came lumbering in, the famous cult standard-bearer of the old school of Yugoslav hard rock.
30 years is no joke! Thirty years in the bag and cult status! Kerber. Old-school rockers who carved themselves into the hearts of all the “teenagers” who lived through the carefree eighties in the bosom of the late Yugoslavia, forever! The Niš hard rock outfit, formed way back in 1981, followed its shows in its hometown of Niš a year ago and in Novi Sad this April with a third anniversary concert in the Serbian capital, Belgrade.
In a two-and-a-half-hour spectacle drenched in fog, with an active play of stage lighting and a generous dose of pyrotechnics, Kerber cut a retrospective cross-section of their career, with the guys on stage playing their most famous and recognizable hits, from wound-up rock pulsers like Mezimac, Bolje, da sam druge ljubio and Ratne igre to ballads like Seobe (performed with a string quartet and vocal backing from the group Konstantin), Još samo ovu noć mi daj and Na razskršću. Toward the end of the show, special guest of the evening Bora Đorđevič (Riblja Čorba) appeared on stage and performed the song Čovek od meda together with the band.
The band radiated incredible charisma and confidence in every move on stage. True to the character of the mythological figure from the ancient Greek version of hell, they broke their chains and shackles uncontrollably and, with their baptism of fire, brought a frenzied Hala sportova to its knees. The crowd followed every gesture, every move, every motion of frontman Goran Šepa, who was in great vocal form, and ate out of the three-headed beast’s hand. An incredible, unforgettable experience loaded with the full yield of a vibrant atmosphere that, in its raw authenticity, kept sending shivers down the spine as the throats of the sold-out Hala sportova shook along with Kerber! A true lover of the legacy of the old (YU) hard rock school, which bloomed in the golden eighties, couldn’t have wished for a better treat in pre-Christmas December! Unforgettable and unique!
Kerber promise a new studio album, and work on it started back in the second half of 2010! Let’s hope it sees the light of day next year! The band played Hala sportova in the middle of Belgrade in the following lineup: Goran Šepa “Gale” (vocals), Tomislav Nikolić (guitar), Branislav “Bane” Božinović (keyboards), Josip Hartl (drums), Zoran Madić (bass).
A tip of the hat to the band for the musical road traveled! Here’s to the next 30!
