Sure, the “New Wave Of British Heavy Metal” (or NWOBHM) tag that popped up in the late ’70s and early ’80s was strictly about a metal movement across the British Isles, from Iron Maiden in London to Persian Risk in Wales, Diamond Head in the Midlands and Blitzkrieg in Scotland. But in those days, the northeast of England was a real hotbed of hard rock and heavy metal. With Newcastle’s Neat Records leading the charge, the region turned out loads of hugely influential and important bands, including Venom, Raven and Tygers Of Pan Tang, and also Satan, likewise from Newcastle. Formed in 1979 around guitarists Steve Ramsey and Russ Tippins, Satan put out their first single, “Kiss Of Death”, in 1982.
After signing with the influential label Roadrunner, Satan released their first proper studio album in 1983. “Court In The Act” (CD1) was ahead of its time, blending elements of speed metal, power metal and thrash metal and setting the standard for the boom of the German metal scene, with members of Helloween and Blind Guardian being huge Satan fans back then.
CD2 is a real treat for Satan diehards and rarity hunters, packing the 1981 demo “Guardian” and the 1982 demo “Into The Fire”, plus assorted live and alternate versions of tracks from the band’s classic era.
The live theme carries on with “Live In The Act” on the third disc, recorded in November 1983 at the Dynamo club in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. In 1984 Satan changed their name to Blind Fury, since they didn’t want the name linking them to the rising black metal scene. They kept all of Satan’s musical direction and sound, but started developing a more melodic approach, captured on the album “Out Of Reach” (CD 4).
Besides the rarities, the box set includes an essay and liner notes by NWOBHM specialist John Tucker, with the text based on interviews with members of Satan.
