Just over a week ago, Voivod finally stepped onto a Slovenian stage for the first time in their long career – one of the most revered bands around, who invented their own utterly unique brand of thrash metal in the eighties, one that quickly broke out of genre boundaries and shot off into a progressive universe. Voivod were inspired by punk, Motörhead and progressive rock, and the result is a sound you recognize instantly and that belongs to Voivod and nobody else. Even after the death of Dennis »Piggy« D’Amour (he died of colon cancer on August 26, 2005), the main mastermind behind music full of dissonant sounds, weird rhythms and atonal chords, Voivod live on. With new guitarist Daniel »Chewy« Mongrain breathing fresh life into the band, they recorded the excellent comeback album Target Earth, followed by the EP Post Society this past February. What does a post-society look like through Voivod’s eyes? Before the band’s first-ever show here in Slovenia (Nov. 2, 2016 at Orto bar), we talked to vocalist Denis “Snake” Belanger to find out!
