It was Shrove Tuesday and we had to go properly nuts, as usual! I mean, when don’t you have to go nuts? Those days are rare. Well, they should be rare, anyway. So we stumbled from Orto Bar across Ljubljana into the strict city center and stopped at “Knafelj”, or to be exact, we landed in the Cutty Sark pub. Part of the crew was having moments of cathartic enlightenment and personal purification at the MediaPark hall (next to PoP TV), where Eagles Of Death Metal were handing out slaps, while the rest of the crew simply picked up the breadcrumbs at Orto Bar with Strašni Riječani. So Cutty Sark was a damn fine solution, where both halves of our crew finally merged into one.
The hour was late or early, depending on who you ask, when we wolfed down a fortifying pizza outside the entrance to Cutty Sark to give us the courage to fight through the thicket of lusty masked bodies. Sausages had long since started entertaining the unruly creatures and the walls of Cutty Sark were merrily bursting at the seams. That night Cutty Sark was looking a lot more like Cutie Sark. The masqueraders were wildly out of control, and you could find every face imaginable among them. From France Rode to Zlatko Zahović, in short, a bowl full of laughs.
When the sufficiently brave “survivors”, four musketeers from our crew, somehow managed to shove their asses through the cramped space, we were of course hit by a stroke on the spot at the sight of “sausage guy” no. 1, Bucot (drums, Sausages), who was already swallowing a whole glass of a huge beer mug, wrapping his lips around the rim and clamping onto the whole glass like a leech. Judging by the “ф” (diameter) of his mouth’s maximum stretch point, only a yawning Greenland blue whale can apparently match him. Congrats also on the tea strainers over the eyes, bravissimo Buco. Masquerader number one of the whole Cutty Sark for 2007!
Of course Sausages are seasoned rockers, and the party was way more than just shamelessly playful. Their rock’n’roll repertoire is pretty standard! A few of their own songs, plus some foreign evergreens, including the obligatory, stretched-out closer Freebird (Lynyrd Skynyrd) with a solo duel between football ninja Čule and Mac.
Sausages are clearly one of the best numbers to call up on the phone, because they were born for this kind of cheeky mischief, when the crowd lets the valves blow. No question. A carnival rock’n’roll show charged with erotic energy and happy faces, all gathered in one place. Pleasures like mischievous bunnies wrapped in choice veils of carnival costumes, beer by the hectoliter, rock by the ton, so it was simply impossible to miss. Long live carnival and “d’klobasiđs”. Forever and ever.
Meanwhile, around Ljubljana, the masqueraders with official masquerader status were also having their five minutes of fame (in a totally idiosyncratic way, of course). The men and women in blue. Their blue-clad vehicles and professional supervision of good behavior and naughtiness were of course on hand this time too in the strict city center of Ljubljana, so that Shrove Tuesday got an extra unforgettable seasoning in that way as well.
