On Saturday, 17.11.2007, Big foot mama rolled into Kočevje’s Park Bulldog Club as part of the promo tour for their new album “Važno, da zadane”. After hours of waiting (the gig was first announced for 10 p.m., then pushed to midnight, and they only kicked off at 12:30 a.m.), the guys finally hit the stage, but without Zoran Čalić – Zoki, who had a gig with Majke. His spot for this show was taken by Slaven Kalebić, normally the guitarist of Mojo hand, where Big Foot Mama bassist Alen Steržaj plays as well.
The guys opened with Važn´ da zadane, which, judging by the crowd’s reaction, has already settled nicely into people’s ears. The fact that the Big foots have cranked out some outstanding hits over the years was proven by Črn tulipan and Mala nimfomanka, which absolutely everybody sang at the top of their lungs, even the folks who only hear and see Big foot mama when they play in their hometown. After those two old hits, Tornado sucked us into the depths. The craziness grew from track to track. Once the crowd was properly warmed up, it was time for everyone to throw off their Oklep. Mal premal was the next track, and I seriously doubt anyone in the crowd had “mal premal” (too little) to drink, since the Big foot mama gig was yet another great excuse for a village fete and for looking a little too deep into the glass. Sad but true. But that was not yet the Konc sveta.
The village-fete partying carried on with Vse se mi upira, and Pomlad brought freedom to the heart. Next came Fenomen, which supposedly could be heard at the Kočevje show for the last time, because fresh tracks will get priority on the setlist. Razjeda was already one of those. Then it was the older tracks’ turn again: Garbage, from the good old days of the album “Kaj se dogaja?”, and Neki sladkega, from the more poppy album “5ing”. The guys then slammed a fresh shot of pure rock ‘n’ roll straight into our veins with Men se trga. Everybody was tearing loose, some a bit too much, and they forgot that the dance floor isn’t theirs alone. Others forgot they were at a rock gig and not at a metal screamfest, and nearly had their heads fly off their necks – “moshing” really doesn’t belong at a Big foot mama show. Neither do the go-go dancers who spent almost the whole night pointlessly writhing on their poles and would have fit better in the club next door, where they were spinning a hundred and one house hits, from remixes to full versions.
Moja mama (lalalalalala) was the next track played, another of the better-known songs from the new album, as the assembled revelers proved with their screaming. Then the guys played one more hit penned by Alen Steržaj, Vrn se k men, which, with a bit of improvisation, morphed into Nisem več s tabo. From past gigs I could tell the show was nearing its end, since the Big foots play that one among the last.
After a short break before the finish, the guys set the place on fire again – first with Matr je mraz, which got a fresh, more rockish makeover, and then with Led s severa. Both tracks fit perfectly into Saturday’s idyll, since it had been snowing all day. If anyone is wondering what happens at Big foot mama gigs, the answer is simple – Rola se. Even though that was the last track on the setlist, the crowd chanted “we want more”, and the guys decided to oblige and closed with Važn da zadane once more, then said their goodbyes after a show that lasted an hour and a half.
The Big foot mama gig was a chance for the youth of Kočevje and Ribnica to escape their gray everyday lives. It also overshadowed the Hladno pivo show at another Kočevje club, Sing sing. Just a note to the organizers: there could be more rock gigs, and the concerts of two quality bands shouldn’t overlap.
