At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg has died at the age of 52.

The news of the singer’s death was first shared today (September 16) by David Isberg, the former vocalist of Swedish death metal outfit Opeth, and confirmed by Arch Enemy guitarist Michael Amott (Arch Enemy drummer Daniel Erlandsson is the brother of At The Gates drummer Adrian Erlandsson, editor’s note).

The news follows August’s revelation that Lindberg was ‘under constant surveillance’ after an unsuccessful battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a cancer of the mouth and palate.

Lindberg was diagnosed with cancer in December 2023, but kept his condition hidden until last month. In a statement the singer wrote back in March but only published on August 15, he admitted he’d had a hard time coming to terms with some of the life challenges thrown at him, and that he apparently had to go through chemotherapy, which would help keep the cancer under control.

Lindberg is considered a founding member of At The Gates. The band formed in 1990 after the breakup of the death metal outfit Grotesque, where Lindberg and guitarist Alf Svensson had played together. In 1991 they put out their first EP, “Gardens Of Grief”, followed in 1992 by their debut album “The Red In The Sky Is Ours”. Their early work was known for its complexity, while Lindberg’s lyrics leaned on the existential and the poetic, which was definitely something new compared to the lyrics of other extreme metal vocalists. Although the band started moving toward more direct songwriting on 1993’s “With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness”, Lindberg’s lyrics stayed introspective.

In 1993, Svensson was replaced by guitarist Martin Larsson. He came to At The Gates thanks to his thrash metal background, having previously played in The House Of Usher. The band’s main songwriters, Jonas (bass) and Anders Björler (guitar), wanted to go for an even more direct sound. The first release from this ‘classic’ lineup was the 1994 mini album “Terminal Spirit Disease”, followed in 1995 by the album “Slaughter Of The Soul”.

It was “Slaughter Of The Soul”, released on Earache, that gave the band their breakthrough on the international scene, with critics praising its stylistic variety and intensity, as well as Lindberg’s unique growl. The album later grew into one of the key inspirations for a whole generation of the new wave of American extreme metal, and some of the most prominent bands in extreme metal today, including Killswitch Engage, Trivium and Shadows Fall, have pointed to it as an influence. When Anders left At The Gates in 1996, the band split up.

After At The Gates broke up, Lindberg joined a number of bands. Among others, he played with Disfear, Skitsystem and Lock Up. At The Gates reunited in 2007 and released three more albums: “At War With Reality” (2014), “To Drink From The Night Itself” (2018) and “The Nightmare Of Being” (2021). Lindberg recorded vocals for a fourth album before his death.

Besides making music, Lindberg taught social studies to English-speaking students. He once told Cryptic Rock: “My students aren’t into heavy metal, but they know what I do. They see the likes on Facebook and the views on YouTube. The students I teach are 80 percent Muslim immigrants and they’re not into this kind of music, but they say what I do is cool.”
