“Yet another attempt to break into the big leagues”
Yogurt are neither a new nor a fresh face on the Slovenian music scene. They swap singers about as fast as some other bands swap bassists, while the reins stay in the hands of guitarist Marko Zorec, and the sound is accordingly samey. The album Absint offers twelve tracks that sound a lot alike – a punchy riff-driven opening, a rhythmic follow-up with new singer Mirna Bogdanovič’s voice up front, a few more keyboards, some gloom, and a production that strongly recalls Peter Penko and his work with, say, Skat and Sfiltrom. Začuti me will remind some of Lara Baruca, Črna soba of the darkness of Nine Inch Nails, and you could even draw a rough instrumental parallel with Lunapark. The lyrics are more or less personal, interesting, but too superficial to stick in your memory.
Why absinthe? Are you supposed to knock some back before “enjoying” the record, to make it more interesting and varied? Maybe, but if that’s the recipe, then it should already be clear that this is a record with a really short shelf life, one that brings no real progress – neither for the band, nor for Slovenian music. The album will sink into oblivion, and Yogurt will probably go down with it. Until the next album and the next singer?!
