To promote his latest album “Live u Domu Omladine”, Darko Rundek and his Cargo Orkester played a show at Tvornica in Zagreb that, by any measure, ranks among the best gigs Tvornica can offer.

The concert, which kicked off at 10 p.m., only wrapped up a few minutes past midnight. It opened with “Enom”, one of Haustor’s best-known songs, this time reworked in a refreshed arrangement. The band played a few of Rundek’s older hits, including “Apokalipso”, “Šejn” and “Šal od svile”, but in a newer musical mode, tailor-made for the style the band has been cultivating in recent years.

The years he spent living in Paris have left their mark on Rundek’s songwriting, which means his original music mixes in French chanson, Slovenian melos and Mediterranean rhythms, and the influence of South American rhythms is clearly audible too.

Besides Rundek, who plays guitar and harmonica, the lineup currently includes trumpeter Igor Pavlica, Emanuel Ferraz on trombone, violinist Isabel, keyboardist and accordionist Dušan Vranić, bassist Bruno Arnal and drummer Đani Pervan. Such a colorful bunch of musicians definitely adds to the bohemian sound the band produces.

Watching them, you get the feeling that a troupe of street musicians traveling from town to town is standing right in front of you. But unlike street troubadours, Rundek and Cargo Orkester delivered a show that was thrilling from start to finish.  For two hours, the packed hall at Tvornica sang along with gusto to Haustor’s biggest hits as well as the favorites from Rundek’s solo albums. Another thing that sets Rundek and his band apart from your average street musicians is that every player in the band is a virtuoso on their instrument, yet they approach playing in a way that nobody stands out from the rest. Instead, the band works as one tight unit, with every element sitting side by side as equals, in the best possible way.

Considering that the band we watched on the Tvornica stage also played on Rundek’s album recordings, it was hardly surprising that Cargo Orkester did the material from Rundek’s solo albums better than the Haustor repertoire. The whole show was a delight in every respect, but one moment especially deserves a mention: the band’s take on “Ruke”, which, with its conviction and the powerful mark it left, towered over the rest of the set.

The concert closed with ”Apokalipso”, while the band saved ”Šejn”, ”Bi mogo da mogu”  and ”Šal od svile” for the encore, and every one of them left the crowd in the hall hugely satisfied.

After the show, the audience got a chance to hang out with Rundek and the members of the orchestra, chat, take photos and get autographs.

Darko Rundek i Cargo Orcestar (2009)

To promote his latest album ”LIVE u DOMU OMLADINE”, Darko Rundek and his Cargo Orcestar played a show at Tvornica in Zagreb that definitely ranks among the best ever held at Tvornica, and among the best Rundek himself has played.

The concert, which started at 10 p.m., ran until a few minutes after midnight. The gig opened with ”Enom”, one of Haustor’s best-known songs, just in a slightly ”newer” outfit. The band played several of Rundek’s old hits, including ”Apokalipso”, ”Šejn” and ”Šal od svile”, but in a newer musical mode that better fits the band’s current style.

The years he spent in Paris have left their mark on Rundek’s work, which means his music combines influences of French chanson, Slavic melos and Mediterranean rhythms, and the influence of South American rhythms is obvious too.

Besides Rundek, who plays guitar and harmonica, the band currently features trumpeter Igor Pavlica and trombonist Emanuel Ferraz, violinist Isabel, keyboardist/accordionist Dušan Vranić, bassist Bruno Arnal and drummer Đani Pervan. Such variety definitely adds to the bohemian sound they produce.

Watching them, you get the feeling that a bunch of street musicians traveling from town to town is standing in front of you, but unlike ordinary street performers, Rundek and Cargo Orcestar played a truly stunning show. The packed Tvornica sang along for two hours to Haustor’s biggest hits as well as the favorites from Rundek’s solo albums. What also sets Rundek and his band apart from street musicians is that every player in the band is a virtuoso on their instrument, but in such a way that none of them stands out too much on their own. Instead, they fit together in the best possible way.

Since they had already played on Rundek’s album recordings, it’s no wonder that Cargo Orkestar still did the material from Rundek’s solo career slightly better than the Haustor repertoire. Even though the whole show was excellent, one moment was especially striking, when they played ”Ruke”, which sounded absolutely gorgeous.

The show ended with ”Apokalipso”, and ”Šejn”, ”Bi mogo da mogu” and ”Šal od svile” were saved for the encores, leaving the crowd fully satisfied.

After the concert, the audience had the chance to hang out with Rundek and the orchestra, chat, take photos and get autographs.
