The story of Celje melodic metal outfit LastDayHere isn’t exactly a long one, since their beginnings only go back to 2005. Despite quite a few lineup changes, which kept coming almost on a conveyor belt right up until this April, and a long, troublesome recording process for the debut, it’s finally here at last… LastDayHere proudly present From Pieces Created.
In just two short years together, the guys have built a sound of their own, deeply rooted in modern metal, or metalcore if you like. Metalcore is a genre that has largely run out of steam, or rather sailed deep into self-recycling, and only a few bands can still deliver quality and freshness. You know what? LastDayHere have transcended this rather limited genre on every possible level, and with their debut they’ve created one of the brighter moments of the local metal scene. The puzzle that is From Pieces Created is made up of ten pieces, ten hard-hitting tracks, in which LastDayHere manage to say more in three or four minutes than bands with ten-minute epics. The machine, which would happily race on with no water and no oil, is driven by roaring guitars and a galloping rhythm section like wild horses. Instrumentally the record never lets up, from the punchy opener Burned Inside right to the final second, when you can finally breathe again. Because that’s something nearly forty minutes of mighty riffs and drum barrages simply won’t allow, and your heart skips an extra beat at the contagious melodies that keep rolling in. It’s all nicely rounded out by fantastic guitar harmonies with a warm sound that’s incredibly appealing to the ear, yet Uroš Boršič and Jure Gorjanc can also hit you hard with brutal riffs. Pero, who is by now the former drummer, lays down an excellent, solid, dynamic foundation behind the kit, whether with interesting transitions, holding the groove, or unstoppable barrages, which he shares nicely with Tomi and his clearly audible bass guitar. The energy running through the instrumental foursome is incredible, they toss dynamic sections back and forth like it’s nothing, whether it’s raw metal sawing or calmer parts ruled by phenomenal, uncomplicated solos, whose strength lies precisely in their simplicity. That’s nothing but praise, since it lets the whole coherent lineup shine, and luckily it’s not spoiled by excursions into technical wankery. Last but not least, there’s the vocal of Marko Duplišak, who watches over the music with a powerful, energetic and raw voice. Marko floors you right from Burned Inside with a fantastic, warm vocal that is calm, introspective and quiet when needed, and he delivers a chillingly good, emotional interpretation of deeper, far-from-shallow lyrics, while also offering exceptional melody and brutal screams without breaking a sweat. There’s no point digging into individual tracks here, since that would only ruin the fun of the first listen, but each of the ten songs tells its own, completely different story that, despite the relative shortness of the tracks, you won’t get sick of any time soon. Quite the opposite, you’ll soon catch yourself humming the catchy choruses and contagious melodies, and the variety and dynamics of every single track will sooner or later wear out your disc.
From Pieces Created is the kind of debut every band would wish for, bringing depth, interesting ideas, and catchy songs that the excellent, crystal-clear production wedges deep into your ears, plus a roaring instrumental foursome and an out-of-the-ordinary vocalist who together form a team breathing with one set of lungs. With the ear of some bigger label, From Pieces Created could easily conquer Slovenia and put the lie to plenty of self-proclaimed musical highlights, what’s more, this is a record that could easily break through abroad too!
