Joe Bonamassa has released two new live singles, »Bad Penny (Live)« and »Back On My Stompin’ Ground (Live)«, from his upcoming album and concert film The Spirit Of Rory Live From Cork, due out June 19 on J&R Adventures. The album was recorded on a sold-out concert tour, specifically in Cork, Ireland.
The setlist for the live album “The Spirit Of Rory Live From Cork” was shaped in part by Gallagher’s legendary 1974 Irish tour and its raw live energy. While songs like »Bad Penny« come from later periods of Gallagher’s repertoire, tracks like »Back On My Stompin’ Ground« tie more directly into the spirit of the original Irish Tour performances – rooted in place, identity and the unique, emotional bond Gallagher had with Irish audiences. That influence carried over into the Cork shows, where Bonamassa and the band approached the material with the same sense of immediacy and emotional honesty that made Gallagher’s live recordings so enduring.
Originally released in 1979 on Gallagher’s album Top Priority, »Bad Penny« became one of Rory Gallagher’s signature songs – a hard, self-assured blues-rock tune built around the idea that trouble always finds its way back. Over the years the song became a staple of Gallagher’s gigs, driven by punchy rhythm, a sharp guitar attack and plenty of defiance.
The release of »Back On My Stompin’ Ground (Live)« reveals a completely different side of Gallagher’s catalog. Originally released on his 1973 album Blueprint, the song blends blues, folk and rock into something deeply rooted in place and identity. Written in the period after Gallagher left Taste, it carries a powerful sense of homecoming and belonging. These are themes that took on even greater meaning during Bonamassa’s Cork shows.
Performed in Gallagher’s hometown, this track grew into one of the most personal moments of the whole show, with Bonamassa and the band leaving the arrangement room to breathe while the audience carried much of the emotional weight.
The album »The Spirit Of Rory Live From Cork« features a setlist Bonamassa played with the blessing of Gallagher’s family, recorded over three consecutive nights that grew out of what was originally planned as a one-off show. The huge response from the local crowd quickly turned the event into something much bigger, with fans pouring in from all over the world to celebrate Gallagher’s music in the city most closely tied to his legacy.
Across 14 tracks, the album covers the full breadth of Gallagher’s legacy, from the explosive intensity of »Walk On Hot Coals« and »Bullfrog Blues« to more intimate moments like »Tattoo’d Lady« and »I Fall Apart«. The extra footage included in the DVD and Blu-ray editions expands the story even further with bonus material, including the film »The Inspiration of Rory«, featuring interviews with Brian May and Slash, plus behind-the-scenes glimpses from Cork and a closer look at the instruments, along with some historical insight tied to Gallagher’s music.
