Four young guys climb onto the stage, and they might just be the ones to kick off Thursday’s party! The quartet from Zasavje tunes up and goes off at full throttle. Frontman Peter Dolšina, rocking a camo-colored SG, gives a quick hello to the mostly clueless crowd in the front rows. “How’s it going? Want some music? You’re ours!!!” and the massacre can begin! The first song is ‘Politika’. The drummer, double bass going, mows down the front rows. Phenomenal drum sound. The guitars are sharpened and screaming, just right for hardcore. The bassist’s fingers fly over the strings. The vocals roar like there’s money riding on it. The first impression is encouraging. Only the sound is, as so often happens with support acts, pretty muddy. But Ragespect saw through the opener with confidence. A short round of applause and they’re already slicing on. ‘Vaš sistem’, ‘T.r.o.s.’, a cover of ‘Brezveze’. The songs are sung in Slovenian, but you can barely tell. Lyrics aren’t the only thing that matters. Energy and drive matter, right? And that, my dear friends, inexperience be damned, Ragespect have! You could describe them as a slightly more metal-sounding version of the likes of Total Chaos or Exploited. Early Agnostic Front must have sounded this raw too. By the way, the lineup at Thursday’s gig wasn’t the usual one. They played with a brand-new, fresh guitarist, Aleksander Lavrini. He learned all the songs in two weeks, since the original guitarist had left not long before. I have to admit he did his homework more than satisfactorily. The brotherly team of the Dolšina and Lavrini brothers carried the gig to the end and wrapped up the half-hour set with a three-times-faster version of the Mötörhead classic ‘Orgasmatron’. Short and to the point! Like a carefully measured kick to the head. The only thing worth admitting is that the HC approach is stylistically quite different from what we expected next.
