Revelations
Artist: Audioslave
Label: Columbia Records
Release: 2006
“A supergroup becomes a super band.”
You could write about Audioslave the same way you would about Velvet Revolver – a bunch of more or less (well-)known musicians pulled together from all over, who earned their “supergroup” status mostly on the back of past (semi-)successes. But by the third album, the get-together of members of Rage Against The Machine and Soundgarden has blown away most people’s doubts – this is a band making seriously high-quality music, aimed at shining a light on the darker side of the world’s spirit rather than on their own star-power whims and pampered egos.
It’s a very cohesive record, with the RATM trio a little more up front this time, especially the brilliant guitarist Tom Morello, who gets more impressive from track to track with his solo bits and rich riffs, and who, we can already say, has found his signature sound on this latest record. Commerford and Wilk are no slouches either, laying down a classic, solid rock backbone for the songs along with a few unbeatable instrumental moments. Cornell’s voice is more and more dependable and convincing, his delivery clear and decisive, at times thunderous, and above all you can hear that the lyrics are his own thoughts and his own take on the world.
Audioslave are well on their way to becoming the Led Zeppelin of the 21st century!
