Savin’ Me
Artist: Nickelback
Label: Roadrunner Records
Release: 2006
Rating: 2.5/5
Whoa!?!? What won’t end up in my hands these days? I never in a million years dreamed I’d get shoved into pontificating about Nickelback - a “post grunge rock” band whose massive success pulled the Roadrunner Records label back from the edge of the abyss. “Savin’ Me” is a rock banger that came out as the fourth single overall from Nickelback’s album “All The Right Reasons” (2005), which has meanwhile gone triple platinum in the US. It’s the third big hit out of the four released from that record, hitting number one on Canada’s national singles sales chart and number nineteen on the Billboard “Top 100” in the US.
Savin’ Me leans on Nickelback’s breakthrough hit How You Remind Me. The song proves what Nickelback are really good at: fusing punch and feeling in a dead simple, direct rock way, which is the prerequisite for launching hits. Few bands that have hit it big commercially have that talent today. I mean the ones who actually can play, and aren’t some “faked” one-hit wonders. Nickelback definitely belong in that camp. Savin’ Me is full of hope and clear vision, with the meaning of life tucked into the verses: helping others and feeling fulfilled while you’re at it. So, a positive, personal, “rockerish” power ballad, with Chad’s recognizable warm, soulful vocals wrapped in a gorgeous acoustic-metallic weave of guitars. And, to everyone’s delight, a warning: “No sugar added!”
This single is no slouch! Besides Savin’ Me, it has two “live” acoustic versions of the songs Animals and Follow You Home, which have never been released before, and on top of that it’s rounded out with a video of Savin’ Me, a concert recording of the band’s show in their hometown of Vancouver (Canada). This release is recommended for all the die hard fans of the band, mostly because of Nickelback’s stage power, which the performance of both acoustic songs confirms.
