The rock band »Skalp« was formed in late 1997 near Ajdovščina. At first the guys played gigs around the Vipava Valley, but before long several Slovenian promoters took notice, and their concert odyssey across Slovenia began.

So far the band has recorded two albums, with a third on the way.

After a break of a few years, they decided to get back on stage and play live again, and so the show at the »Jazzy« music club in Postojna happened.

It was right there, at the »Jazzy« club, that we caught the very first show of the next chapter of the »Skalp« odyssey, with a lineup of Peter Krkoč (vocals), Aleš Pelhan (guitar, vocals), Mladen Marjanovič (guitar, vocals), Matjaž Koron (bass, vocals) and Tonči Valič (drums).

The crowd was a proper one, people who genuinely love their music and have been following them since the very beginning.

After some initial feeling-each-other-out between band and audience, the atmosphere in the club built from song to song and was great from start to finish.

At 10 PM »Jazzy« was still almost empty, with a few exceptions, but when the band took the stage at 11:45 PM, the crowd was as big as it was going to get, and the show kicked off.

»Metka Baletka« danced through the club first, followed by »Resničen svet«, »Preproste rešitve«, »Gospodar«, »Grem na svoje«, ……  The band ran through songs from both albums, and the audience sang along with them.

As a taste of what’s coming, or a bonus (depending on how you look at it), they also served up »Hladen tuš« from their still-in-the-works album.

The band really does give off positive energy, and their loyal audience soaks it up and hands it right back.

The sound was good, and the stage lighting was about as much as you can pull off with a few spotlights mounted above the stage.

The intensity grew from song to song, the musicians got more relaxed and playful as the night went on  and they steered the show toward the finish with plenty of routine, wrapping it up at 1:10 AM.

All things considered, »Skalp« may have been away from the stage for a while, but they still sound tight and professional, and in my view they’re one of the more »refreshing« rock bands on the Slovenian scene.

What kind of refreshment will their new album bring? Keep it up, and may there be as many live shows as possible.
