Venue: Orto bar / Ljubljana
Concert date: 29.12.2016

As always, December brings cold, crowds and Bela snežinka echoing from every corner of Ljubljana. But for the last few years, December has also meant Space Unicorn on Fire galloping into Orto bar, and along with their metal Santa Claus they’ve become a staple for everyone who can’t quite stomach mulled wine and accordions. This year a visit to Orto bar in the final gasps of 2016 was even more tempting, since the bar was dedicating the night to the memory of Lemmy, while Space Unicorn on Fire dedicated their show to the release of their long-awaited debut, Gallop Through the Stars.

The visitors packed every nook and cranny of Orto, and upstairs Space Unicorn on Fire boosted the good vibes with a welcome drink and by handing out their trademark head horns. A few minutes late, a pre-recorded Police Academy intro announced the band’s arrival on stage, and then the guys kicked things off with Let’s Go to Space, an in-your-face invitation to a good hour-long trip through nebulae, mists and galaxies. On the back of a space unicorn, of course. As usual, the show had a full dose of humor, great energy on stage that the band passes on to the crowd without any trouble, and the superb tightness of a confident band, with only Rok “Tavta” Tavčar allowing himself a few vocal slip-ups. This time the debut release gave it all an even more festive feel, which the guys can rightly be proud of, and with guests on stage (including a former member of the band Egzi), the album launch got an extra touch. In a good hour, Space Unicorn on Fire served up the “over the top” space anthems you’d expect, like Let’s Go to Space, Commander and Medzvezdna mačkica, while a lovely ballad, August Blues, brought the softer side.

The band’s humor, and maybe their musical direction too, might not be for everyone, but there’s no doubt the release party for Space Unicorn on Fire’s debut was a huge success, and Gallop Through the Stars will be a nice shot of life and variety for the sometimes too serious Slovenian metal scene.
