Svojat – Fuga za narod
Svojat are releasing a new single and video ‘Fuga za narod’ on Ente Tapes on March 3, 2026. The track is the first taste of the material for the upcoming album, and at the same time the overture to the “concert performance” of the same name, produced by the international performing arts platform Via Negativa.
The project marks the 150th anniversary of Ivan Cankar’s birth and 35 years of Slovenian statehood. Its starting point is Cankar’s figure of the folk fiddler Kurent, who turns a thousand hours of suffering into one hour of joy. The personal confession of musician and poet Andrej Fon in the role of Kurent is a musical fusion of frustration and revolt against all-pervasive ideological indoctrination.
The ideology of the nation as the hellish fugue of the 21st century keeps ramping up its canonical momentum with the acceleration of digital communication. This posthistorical machine mercilessly grinds the individual down into a shapeless nationalist mass. ‘Fuga za narod’ is a revolt against the collective amnesia of historical memory and a reminder that a nation is an imagined political community.
Svojat recorded ‘Fuga za narod’ at Bear Tracks studio, and it was mixed and mastered by Vitja Balžalorsky. The video, a deconstruction of national symbolism, was created by Vid Hajnšek and Vid Uršič, while the artwork for the single is by Matej Stupica.
