The Slovenian scene is waking up, coming back to life and blooming, with a growing pile of high-quality releases. That could be the short version of what you’ll conclude when you press play on the debut from a Ljubljana quintet with a name so odd yet so charming that you instantly doubt anything this convincing and un-Slovenian-sounding could come out of our side of the Alps. And you’d be right to doubt, because The Language Of Thought Hypothesis are anything but fixated on these few square kilometers of home turf, where more and more bands keep popping up, yet only a rare few have a clear vision and a strategic plan for world domination.

This Endless State Of Mind is part of that strategic plan to usurp Europe and the world, and the weaponry is an explosive mix of melody, metalcore playfulness and brutal deathcore vocals that I could compare without a second thought to names like As I Lay Dying, Unearth, Bridge To Solace and The Acacia Strain. But I’d much rather focus on the fact that what’s on offer is a truly fresh, above-average take on an otherwise often abused and hollowed-out genre. This time the record stands completely on its own, with an uncompromising aesthetic and sonic identity. The opening guitar screech and sonic buzzsaw of Judas Nightmare is the first straight punch, but you go down for good somewhere around the singalongs of the record’s fourth musical penetration, AA is For Quitters, or, if you were missing some gentle foreplay, with the title track just moments later. The Fall could be a favorite too, with some seriously clever connecting tissue. Besides a clear mind and muscle mass, you need a soul too, and this band has a mighty strong cardiovascular system and an even bigger pair of brain hemispheres, plus (and this is key) brutal precision and a shared consciousness that turns dream images into reality. The Language Of Thought Hypothesis are like a symbiont, a single organism, with no slacking and no ego-tripping. Vocalist, chief thinker, lyricist and band promoter Dejan Filipovič is just one part of one damn well-oiled machine. The guitar duo of Rok “Corey” Ljubi and Joco Premru fires off bursts of ingenious riffs and melodic looseness, tightly followed by the rhythm section of bassist Damir Juretič and one of the more talented drummers of the younger generation, Nace Mikuš. No single person could have created this kind of harmony.

This Endless State Of Mind is a work of collective consciousness. Each of its nine tracks makes a loud case for a perfect score, since you won’t find a single weak link on this album, even if you wanted to. Scarily, the sonic addiction kicks in on the very first listen, and we can definitely look forward to the arsenal being expanded soon with fresh shrapnel of pure explosive pleasure. And if you think the enthusiasm is over the top, I suggest you check these claims with your own pair of ears, which is always welcome and even warmly recommended!
