Friday’s gig at Dom kulture in Ruše was something special, because at first glance Ruše looks like a godforsaken village where nothing ever happens … Driving through town, you wonder where the hell this culture hall is. Luckily it sits right next to the only road running through the place, so there was no missing it. The show was announced for 8:30 PM, but at that hour the hall was more or less empty. Over the next half hour a good few people trickled in, and at 9 PM the guys hit the stage, where a decent-sized crowd was waiting for them, and kicked things off with Leaving It All Behind. The crowd of about a hundred and seventy was reserved at first, but by the second song, Misunderstood, they were swaying a bit more boldly to the beat of pure rock, and Release My Gun properly drove the folks up front wild. Proof that the guys made a real dent in listeners’ ears with their first studio album “Seven Days” (2005) . The new songs are already going down really well with the audience too, as they showed during Fair Enough. Guitarist Peter wrote that one when his daughter was born. Next came the ballad Lost Inside, followed by the punchier No Place Left To Go. The guys had the crowd well warmed up by then, and almost every head was bobbing. The braver ones moved closer to the stage, since at the start nearly everybody had been hanging out at the back of the hall. The show rolled on with Like It Slow and Shooting Straight. By the time they got to Following, the guys had built such a lovely atmosphere that words would only spoil it. The crowd let itself be led, and you could feel the warm glow of the music pouring out of the instruments.
One of the best songs from the first album is Do You Know The Sound, and when Kevin sang the first lines, it took plenty of people’s breath away. Kevin stood in the middle, bathed in light, the other three members in the slightly dimmed part of the stage, with only Giovanni’s bass plucking behind him. Only near the end of the song did Peter on second guitar and Gregor on drums join in. It’s hard to describe the feeling, because you just have to experience it. Hands down the most magical moment of the night.
Three new songs followed: The Urge, Fade Away, and the first single from “Nothing To Lose” (2007) , Waiting For The Rain, which is on numerous radio charts all over Slovenia. The Who’s legendary My Generation was the next song they played, and like all its predecessors it earned a big round of applause. The guys then fired straight into Evolution without a break. After a short pause came Something Else, and with a cover of Kick Out The Jams (originally by MC5) they brought the hour-and-a-half show to a close.
It’s crazy how a band that hasn’t been on the music scene all that long can make a Friday night so special in a place as small as Ruše. And of course, thanks to the crowd, who helped create such a lovely atmosphere. Really something special, since the gig was even better than the actual launch show at Ljubljana’s Mediapark (RockLine report HERE).
Saturday brought the show in Novo mesto. The guys played the Novo mesto party crowd the same songs as in Ruše, but the crowd that gathered at Lokal Patriot was a lot younger. Even though they were in a more “cheerful” state, the vibe was once again something else. And since we were in Novo mesto, home of Dan D, Tide had a surprise ready for the night. During Following they were joined by Tomislav Jovanovič – Tokac, and what can I say: a great collaboration, no question.
At the request of the guys and girls in the front row, Tide also played Leave This Place, a welcome addition to the repertoire. The show wrapped up after an hour and a half, and anyone who missed it should be kicking themselves.
Both the Friday and Saturday gigs were excellent, with just the right number of people to weave that genuine bond between band and audience, the kind every rocker at heart has to experience at least once in their life. Tide definitely have a lot more in store.
