33 years of music, now as a solo artist, before that in bands, some with big names: Bijelo Dugme, Divlje Jagode, Vatreni poljubac….. a new album after 13 years…… it all pointed to a glorious night on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 8 p.m. at the legendary Grbavica, in his Sarajevo.

Let me skip over the organizational slip-ups, and there were quite a few, and think about the music instead, the music that those of us who showed up got to enjoy (far fewer people than expected, of course, though enough that some clever camera work managed to make it look like the place was jam-packed).

The first pleasant surprise of the evening was the opener Dolia from Sarajevo, a promising young band that calls itself Symphonic Power Metal, with a still not very extensive repertoire of original material, but fresh and energetic, with plenty of potential you could feel coming. Sadly, I can’t say the same for the second opener, Paranoid Android, who promised plenty of quality R&R, but, maybe because of the monotonous instrumental work, maybe because of the unintelligible and at times flat vocals, we never actually got it.

And then Mladen Vojičić  Tifa, the long-awaited star, the old tomcat…… What the opener couldn’t pull off happened the moment he walked on stage…… euphoria……, which he skillfully stoked with emotional delivery, build-ups and, during the song Grbavica, which recalls wartime Sarajevo,  even fireworks. Original songs alternated with Bjelo Dugme and Divlje Jagode numbers……, in fact the concert was a retrospective of 33 years on stage. The thrilled crowd happily forgave him for dodging the higher notes now and then, sang along with him in unison, got emotional……and that’s just how it should be. As far as the not exactly great sound system allowed, besides the celebrated vocals we could also hear some excellent instrumentalists and backing vocalists, who deserve all the praise: Elmir Imamović Elči (bass), Admir Dželmo Tetkin sin (drums), Omer Blentić Profesor (keyboards) and Nihad Rahić Nixon (guitar), the last two also on backing vocals.

In short, if you’re feeling nostalgic and not too nitpicky, we got three hours of good music. And in that sense the concert wasn’t just a retrospective, but a teaser for the album (recorded in Novo mesto), which has just come out, or will be coming out in some places, and carries a telling title: Spreman na sve………. Let’s be ready too!
