On the fourth album from American hard rock outfit Boston, Tom Scholz is still the soul of the band, but his collaborators are brand new. He swapped out the entire lineup, and with new singer Fran Cosmo he got remarkably close to the original vocalist, the late Brad Delp, sadly no longer with us. The Boston sound combines a mighty guitar, untouchable, crystal-clear backing vocals, a distinctive lead voice and a killer rhythm section. Partly because of the workload and partly because of his drive for perfection, Boston are an extremely unprolific band. Scholz just doesn’t leave anything to chance, and with all his demands he maybe goes a bit too far, since the songs sometimes leave a rather pale and stale aftertaste. Technically, Walk On has no flaws whatsoever, and it’s played with incredible precision, but, as mentioned, the soul gets a little lost in some of the tracks. Tom Scholz also explained why Walk On took him eight years to get out the door. After the world tour in 1987, they started recording new songs on new tech toys, which Scholz built himself, of course. In between those recordings, Scholz also built his own home studio, which ate up two years. That’s also when the legal fight began between the band and their former label CBS, who wanted the band to record faster. Scholz wouldn’t budge, being a perfectionist, and after a year of courtrooms and drama, Boston finally won. In 1990 work in the new studio finally got going, and after three years of work and sleepless nights, the eighty-seventh version of Walk On finally saw the light of day. Some people just know how, right? If on the previous album Third Stage Tom Scholz still had help from singer Brad Delp as the only original member of the lineup, then Walk On is basically a Scholz solo album. Apart from the vocals, Scholz wrote most of the songs and plays all the instruments himself, with slight help from a few collaborators. In the US alone, Boston have sold more than 30 million copies of their first three albums to date. All three also hit number one on the American album charts. With Walk On, Boston have held on to their position after all these years, a position that had been badly shaken by their inactivity.

Tom Scholz turns everything he touches into gold. Then platinum, and in the end, iron….
