Delta Riff are a rock trio from Ljubljana that got going in 2023. These young guys, packed with drive, hard-working zeal, talent and ideas, gave birth to their studio debut “Klic v neznano!” in November 2025. It’s a record that embodies all the virtues listed above, and for a debut it’s a very convincing launchpad from which the band can build its artistic character going forward.

Usually, or at least in the classic days of rock’n’roll, which gave us The Police, Rush, Triumph and Motörhead among others, this kind of release of vibrations hit hardest in a ‘triangle’ arrangement of the building blocks of sound (plainly put, the trio format). Delta Riff follow that classic moment. It doesn’t even matter how; ‘instinctively’ is enough. They’ve carried over to the album a distinctly organic feel and sonic liveliness, backed by a dynamic production with a truly three-dimensional picture of all those sound elements laid out in space.

The trio fills out the sonic picture with real skill. Alongside the guitar phrases, the bass guitar, rattling away brightly, fills the available space very deftly with a keen sense of musical texture, and together with the often potent rhythmic drive of the rolling drums, it’s a crucial element that brings in a hungry ‘groove’ while the album gains in realness and sincerity.

The ten tracks bring a pleasing variety of ideas, so a dynamic flow of events across the album is guaranteed. Delta Riff don’t do ‘sugarcoated’ moments either, the kind that might push them into mushy pop, which is so often the move of new Slovenian bands desperate to win the favor of the radio airwaves (and as recent years have taught us, that kind of maneuvering gets forgotten very quickly). They’re satisfyingly theatrical and dark, and they don’t let up on that across the whole record. The album is very elemental, speaking in a primal, direct way. Tracks without a single experimental detour. That’s why they grab you instantly.

Slovenian is the foundation of their identity, and the band allows itself just one excursion into English (Heart Of Gold), which, unlike the other tracks, grows out of a major key and counts as the album’s oddball. Even there the band stays true to building an atmospheric crescendo into a bombastic chorus melody, of which there’s no shortage on the album. You’ll pick your own favorites on that front. Heart of Gold is thus a fully successful detour. Another departure is the track Koža, a cover of Sarajevo musician Esad Balić. The guys set his lyrics to music beautifully, so the track feels like just another original from the band, and the Serbo-Croatian lyrics are a guarantee that the high musicality continues, driven at this point too by the potent and passionate vocal approach of singer Tit Potecin! This track has even absorbed some of that eighties ‘new wave’ rhetoric.

All that Delta Riff deliver with their debut is very well-honed rock’n’roll, adorned by excellent performances from all three players. That gives the debut a lot of compactness and, while listening, the feeling that we can freely enjoy a real energy bomb that keeps you hooked from the first second to the last. The band surprises at the end of the album by bringing back the opening acoustics, slyly building up the atmosphere in the track Vsak v svojo smer. At that point it even deftly borrows a few fun delta blues twists before launching into a final rock thunderclap! It’s also great that the album is short, that the band gets straight to the point and doesn’t ramble on (plainly put, doesn’t ‘weigh you down with ideas’). At the same time, the tracks (in terms of the character of each individual composition) are very cleverly spread across the record. That’s precisely what keeps the listener close, paying attention to the substance of the album. From start to finish. But there’s something very important here. That dark melodrama of a highly predatory groove wrapped around the compositions gives the band the foundation of its artistic character’s recognizability (I can say outright it’s a typically Slovenian rock character), and let’s hope the band holds on to it and nurtures it on future releases too!
