In its short existence, Celje’s Burn fuse have shown that Slovenia is also producing bands whose main inspiration isn’t something from the eighties. With their first EP, Not Too Late, Burn fuse made it clear that the influence of modern metalcore has reached us here too. This isn’t metalcore drawing its main influence from hardcore, though. The emphasis is more on melody, technicality, breakdowns and catchy, singable vocals.

With their second EP, Burn fuse aren’t exactly reinventing the wheel. But you can definitely hear progress. The songs themselves are dynamic, full of aggression and don’t drag on needlessly. The guys aren’t afraid to try something new, like various electronic touches, which add layers to the tracks. At the same time, you have to wonder whether these extras are even necessary?  You could say they’re superfluous, but luckily the band doesn’t overdo them like Asking Alexandria, Of Mice and Man and the like, which would ultimately just come off as cheesy.

With five new songs, Burn fuse this time simply confirm the direction they took on their first EP. These are fairly tried-and-tested ideas you can hear from plenty of metalcore bands today. Still, there’s a touch of modernity too, which shows the band won’t stick to metalcore alone. Metalcore tricks are undoubtedly front and center. The mix of harsh and clean vocals fits the bill as well. Breakdowns are there too, of course, but without going overboard. Still, now that we’ve mentioned modernity, it has to be said that the band knows how to flirt with a subgenre or two beyond that. The standout here is the lively rhythm section, which now and then leans into a more technical element, the kind you mostly notice in djent these days. When it comes to showcasing technique, the drumming is especially important, and it’s more than up to the task on Burn fuse’s record. A great drum sound can be key for a band to get noticed these days. Maybe that will help Burn fuse win over a label or two.

Burn fuse prove on their second outing that they’re evolving, though at times they come across a little reserved. But if that’s a sign they’re saving the best for their first full-length, there’s plenty to look forward to from Burn fuse.
