Iamdisease haven’t been around for long. Praznina is their second full-length, though with 7 tracks that play out in a good twenty-odd minutes, it’s really more of an EP running time. But the guys in the band are hardly rookies. They previously played in outfits like Elodea, Kennybal Smith, The Hoax Program and others. In short, a bunch of hardcore and punk bands that left their mark on the Slovenian scene.
Iamdisease were supposedly described as straight-up hardcore at first, but by the very first track, Praznina, it’s more than clear that the band has worked the strengths of other genres into their hardcore. The songs are mostly driven by a faster tempo, with hardcore, metal and crust elements front and center, but the slower parts clearly show a sludge metal influence too. The most sludge-leaning track is the closer Druga narava, which wraps up the album perfectly with its slowness and morbid vibe. Plenty of write-ups slap all sorts of (sub)genres on Iamdisease, but here it’s best to let the listener decide which genres they hear in the band’s music.
For their genre, Iamdisease don’t overcomplicate things. The songs hit hard with simple guitars, a rhythm section and a rough vocal that’s pretty much unintelligible, but that’s exactly what makes the whole thing darker and more morbid. There’s nothing to complain about in the sound itself: the guitar is dirty, the bass is audible, and only the drums could be a touch louder. Either way, it’s a big step up from their first release. The songs are more dynamic, and you can hear a nice improvement in the sound too.
Iamdisease’s second album shows good signs of natural progress. The songs feel more polished and the sound is undoubtedly better. Given the band’s wide musical spectrum, there’s still plenty of interesting stuff to expect from Iamdisease down the road.
