An upgrade or a sequel to one of the best records to come out of the former Yugoslavia – ‘Mirakul’

Gibonni is one of those Croatian artists whose mastery nobody doubts – not even the most hardcore anti-Croatian music critics and editors. He’s got a long road behind him, plenty of musical experience, know-how and charm, plus the knack for pulling world-class musicians into his projects (Vlatko Stefanovski, Manu Katche, Tony Levin, Marko Ramljak).

With his last record, ‘Mirakul’, Gibonni made something that’s not just Croatian or European in scale, but properly world-class, which also makes it a record that probably nobody will ever top. Not even he himself! And if ‘Unca Fibre’ was a long-awaited album that many hoped would see Gibonni take a step forward, then even more people ended up disappointed, because they expected more than they got – just a slightly fulfilled continuation of ‘Mirakul’.

No doubt about it – ‘Unca Fibre’ is a masterful record with plenty of songs we’ll happily keep listening to years from now, but I can’t shake the feeling that it was made with too much calculation (you can hear something similar on Robbie Williams’ ‘Intensive Care’, which was built for crowd-pleasing at live shows). Some tracks just never end, the polished and well-thought-out arrangements are stretched too thin, there’s that live-show emptiness in the songs, the choruses keep repeating, and on top of that, three songs (‘Vrime da se pomirim sa svitom’, Šta će meni moja dica reć’ and ‘Sebi dovoljna’) show up in two different versions.

Given how long we waited for this record, we were right to expect more.
