Sanje
Artist: Nodus
Label: Mama Tank
Release: 2006
With their original album, nOdus set out to take on the Slovenian pop rock scene and prove that bands with a female singer can be really interesting. All well and good, if only the likes of Lunapark and Yogurt weren’t also making music in Slovenia that sits close to theirs, and if they didn’t sound so much like Lara Baruca, naio ssaion and one of the many Skat splinter groups in certain songs.
Energetic, playful, with the emphasis on instrumental variety and Evelin Rijavec’s assertive voice, it’s very friendly to radio stations and listeners, yet still distinctive enough to appeal to the slightly more discerning crowd too. And since these days you can sell music either with “dumb stunts” and scandals or with quality and substance, nOdus also get pulled out of the gray mediocrity by quality lyrics, which are simple but true to life.
Props to the band, but to rise above merely average, they’ll need a whole lot more imagination, originality and daring.
