Skin And Bones

0 10

Artist: Foo Fighters
Label: Sony BMG
Released: 2006

A live album, and an acoustic one on top of that, from an otherwise die-hard, full-throttle rock band!!!

Up to their last double studio album In Your Honor, Foo Fighters were known as a rock band that wasn’t exactly into acoustic music… but, as they’ve done so many times before, they surprised their fans and made a truly intimate, stripped-down record, even inviting Norah Jones to join in, and then took that second, acoustic half of In Your Honor (along with a few acoustically reworked hits from earlier albums, of course) out on the road as well.

You’ll find a recording of one of those shows on Skin And Bones, and anyone who’s only given Foo Fighters a casual listen so far is in for a surprise. The songs (compared to the studio versions) are incredibly fun and playful, Dave Grohl’s voice charmingly gives out a few times, and the band’s sound stays dynamic and full the whole way through. That’s partly thanks to the guest musicians, who picked up the violin, mandolin and harmonica and sat down at the piano, building up the richness and variety of the sound until you could slot it somewhere between The Band and Counting Crowes.

Some will say this is a record for the band’s fans only, but it’ll also win over everyone who has a soft spot for country, and definitely for acoustic-tinged rock.
